What Is Active Transport? Active Transport is a physical activity undertaken as a means of transport. It refers to any form of human-powered transportation such as: walking, cycling, using a wheelchair and even skateboarding. There are many ways to engage in active transportation, whether it is walking to the bus stop or shops, or cycling to school or work.
What Are The Benefits Of Active Transport Physical exercise is very important to maintain health, flexiblity, fitness and physical functioning. It increases our physical fitness and strength, assists our mobility, promotes good balance and posture, and helps us to remain independent for longer.
Physical activity also reduces the risk of many illnesses and diseases such as: depression, heart disease, obesity, adult-onset diabetes, osteoporosis and high blood pressure. By choosing active transport (instead of using the family car) you can lower your risk of developing health problems and can even save money in the process.
Using active transport to get to school, the shops, work or social gatherings can also increase your contact with neighbours and the wider community. Walking, cycling, using a wheelchair or skateboarding as a means of transport benefits the environment by reducing car emissions, and can also reduce traffic noise in your local town.

The blue circle on the map shows how far you can expect to walk from the centre of your town in every direction within approximately five minutes; the green circle shows how far you can expect to walk from the centre of your town in every direction within approximately ten minutes.....and so on.
